Parque das Nações

Parque das Nações is the most ambitious urban renewal project ever accomplished in Portugal.

Until the mid nineties of the last century, the Eastern part of the city was in abandon. The area, occupied by obsolete petrochemical and industrial plants underwent a radical change. With the construction work to hold  World Expo'98, there was a miracle, a makeover from the bottom. Eleven years have gone by.

The World Exhibition endowed this area with the most up to date equipments and infrastructures. Contemporary architecture asserted itself. Materials, shapes, colours. Architecture and design. There is no other neighbourhood in Lisbon like this.

Following Expo'98, the area was converted into a residential, service and cultural area. To give a few examples: the Pavillion of Knowledge, the Atlantic Pavillion, where some of Portugal's biggest concerts and shows are held, Vasco da Gama Tower (the tallest building in the city), theme gardens, Camões Theatre (the official theatre of the National Ballet Company) and the Oceanarium (one of the world's largest aquaria). It is an area of the city that competes on several fronts with other world capitals.

Parque das Nações is frequented by those who search calm and relaxation. Here you find many families strolling or practicing sport. Lisbon Casino (opened in April 2006) is situated close to  Vasco da Gama Shopping Center (one of the city's most popular). Besides gambling, you can watch free concerts at the Casino.

A good way to get to know the Park from one end to another is to travel on the sky lift (tickets at 2 and 6 euros). From it you can appreciate the famous "canopy" of Portugal's Pavilion (by architect Siza Vieira) or the Garcia de Orta Garden.

And as the river is a common denominator in the whole Parque das Nações, muster some courage. At Centro Náutico you learn to sail and get a sailor´s, coast or local captain's permit. All at Doca dos Olivais. If you prefer to stick to land, lose yourself in the 3000 sq. meter park, next to Vasco da Gama Bridge. It is free.

When it is time for lunch or dinner, remember: "La Brasserie de l'Entrecôte" (Alameda dos Oceanos, lote 1.02.1, loja 1) or "Afreudite" (an aphrodisiac restaurant at Passeio das Garças, lote 4.39. loja 1J).

In Parque das Nações there are churches, children's nurseries, schools, clinics and hospitals (Cuf Descobertas Hospital, Rua Mário Brotas).

Gare do Oriente (built for Expo'98) is the city´s biggest transport interface. It is served by trains, metro, buses (to Lisbon and the whole country) and taxis. It is a station in glass, steel and concrete. It is worth a visit.
